The Great Adzom Monastery

Adzom Monastery was established during the mid of 16th Century. It is located at the of Zangju River, a branch derived from Golden Sand Lake (Chi: Jingsa Jiang), which is a beautiful area on Tashi Dungkar (Auspicious White Conch Shell) Mountain, 4500 m above sea level in Payul District.  Adzom Monastery is a special sacred place, uniquely blessed by the Holy Tara, the female Buddha of love and protection. Adzom Monastery inherited and maintains its ancient and beautiful tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, and was acclaimed for its ancient and enriching history and legacy. The present Prayer Hall, adorned with simple yet intricate Tibetan style of construction, was built by its first abbot, the 1st Gyaltse Rinpoche.

All abbots and lineage holders of Adzom Monastery were Masters and Siddhas of Great Perfection (Tib: Dzogchen). Ever since it was first established for more than 400 years ago, Adzom Monastery has become the Dharma Centre for spreading the common and uncommon teachings and transmissions of Tantra and Dzogchen.

Since the Masters and abbots of Adzom Monastery were great scholars and practitioners of not only Nyingma school but also gained mastery in other lineages such as: Sakya, Geluk, Kagyu and others. With the spirit of Rime (non-sectarion), they will therefore transmit these teachings whenever it is appropriate to those who have affinity. When the conditions are ripen, the authentic Dharma will be spread and prospered.

Historically speaking, there were many sub-monasteries under the supervision of Adzom Monastery namely: Palden Monastery (India), Gongyul Monastery and Retreat Centre (Nepal) and others. These branches of Adzom Monastery are the centers of the Holy Dharma, guided and supervised by gurus and Khenpos of Adzom Monastery who are responsible for the Sangha members’ education, practices, costs of living as well as maintenance and development of the monasteries.

Better than meditating for a hundred thousand kalpas on
a deity with all the major and minor marks,
Is to think of one's teacher for an instant.
Better than a million recitations of the approach and accomplishment practices, is a single prayer
addressed to the teacher.
